Baldwin on the Barn was a site-specific mural created in 2020 in collaboration with Joe Diggs on a privately owned building along historic Route 6A in Barnstable Village. The work drew from the words and legacy of writer and activist James Baldwin as part of a public moment around racial justice and civic engagement. Although the mural received support from many in the community, it also sparked debate because it was installed in a designated historic district without official town approval. The building was eventually demolished, and the mural now lives on through documentation as part of Barnstable’s recent visual history.
